Product Description

A brilliant and personal examination by sensational and bestselling author Karl Ove Knausgaard of his Norwegian compatriot Edvard Munch, the famed artist best known for his iconic painting The Scream

In So Much Longing in So Little Space, Karl Ove Knausgaard sets out to understand the enduring and awesome power of Edvard Munch’s work by training his gaze on the landscapes that inspired Munch and speaking firsthand with other contemporary artists, including Anselm Kiefer, for whom Munch’s legacy looms large. Bringing together art history, biography, and memoir, Knausgaard tells a passionate, freewheeling, and pensive story about not just one of history’s most significant painters, but the very meaning of choosing the artist’s life, as he himself has done. Including reproductions of some of Munch’s most emotionally and psychologically intense works, chosen by Knausgaard, this utterly original and ardent work of criticism will delight and educate both experts and novices of literature and the visual arts alike.

Review

Fans of the author''s acclaimed autobiographical novels will find this book to be of Rosetta Stone-like importance as he delves into Munch''s exploration of memory and how the artist rendered the past in a way that still feels both intimate and universally relatable . . .  An immersive, impassioned history that illuminates both subject and author.” – Kirkus, starred review

If you haven''t read Knausgaard before, this book may come as a surprise to you. That''s because most books about Artists are written by “experts” who more often than not have axes to grind, theories to advance in art criticism.

Not Knausgaard.

Like his novels where he foolishly lays out his bad behavior, raw emotions, and his reactions to everyday life, here he writes about his personal responses to Munch''s work. And like his prior books, he is a master at describing the complex, often contradictory feelings that are aroused in him by Munch''s paintings.

Knausgaard doesn''t canonize Munch; he depicts a flawed, often amatuerish, and always insecure artist who nonetheless pursues his ambition relentlessly. Munch left behind a lifetime''s cache of works, many of which are not very good, but the aggregate of those paintings articulate the remarkable journey he took.

Knausgaard understands the artist''s process; the Doubt and Belief in Painting, as Gerhard Richter spoke about. I think he would be the first to admit that much of his own writing is not very good, but he is still working on it.

“The present is so powerful because it is the only thing that exists, all the rest is simply notions we have…” Norwegian author Karl Ove Knausgaard explores the life of Norway’s most celebrated artist, Edvard Munch, to understand his works of art as they relate to the artist’s vision of life. He does include some biographical elements to understand the life of the artist, but it''s not overwhelming or full of details, instead he focuses more on how the artist evolved his style towards expressionism in the 1890s, he draws parallels with his compatriot on how art (in Munch''s case painting, in Karl Ove Knausgaard''s case writing) is used to convey the vision of what it means to be a human being with all our weaknesses, trivialities, mistakes, and so on. He talks about some of his favorite works by Munch and details what the artist was trying to communicate. He talks about Munch''s legacy in Norway, and even shares a fun anecdote towards the end of the book on how he participated in an online art auction to outbid everyone on a drawing by Munch. I really enjoyed the book and I feel I can better appreciate the art of Edvard Munch.

It is hard to imagine a book better than this one about Edvard Munch and his art. An extremely talented writer.
I plan to read more of his work starting with My Struggle Book 1. Delighted to have found him.

This book is one of few books on an artist and their full body of works I have read that feels actually complete and encompassing of that artist’s style.

A bit of a disappointment...

I found the text sensitive and enlightening but in this paperback edition I sadly took exception to the fact that the images of Munch''s work that Knausgaard so thoughtfully examines are not placed nearer to his text. It was frustrating to keep searching for them,
